The Onion pattern with which Verner Panton supplemented his legendary Decor I collection for Mira-X in the mid 1970s is without a doubt one of his most impressive textile designs. It differs from the original patterns in the collection in several ways. Whereas the previous Decor I fabrics – Circle, Square, Curve, Stripe, Chequerboard and Wave – were all based on clear, geometric forms, the Onion motif, for all its regularity, stands out as seemingly organic in origin. Another difference lay in the fact that the Onion was available in only one generously proportioned scale rather than the usual three. A wise decision which effectively emphasized the hugely strong dynamic and graphically spatial effect of this design. And finally, Panton also changed, or added to, the Decor I color scheme especially for the Onion. In addition to a multicolored variant which matched the color spectrum of the original collection, the design was also available in beige, green and golden brown versions - possibly by way of a concession to the changing color perception and sense of the 1970s.
