The formation of a pattern

The soul of Fonal lies in its unique origin. The design is part of the Morpho collection , which focuses on the dialogue between printing techniques and woven grid structures created with textile printing. Eszter Nagy used ink-soaked yarns pressed onto woven fabrics. This resulted in a refined pattern of squares defined by the raw, irregular imprint of the yarn. These "ghost lines" capture a moment of physical contact, now translated into a lasting textile landscape in the form of a rug.

A dialogue of fibers: nettle and silk

In creating Fonal, Nagy and Designercarpets Drechsle deliberately employed a contrasting material to bring the print to life. The base is hand-knotted from undyed, raw muslin , providing a matte, earthy foundation that celebrates the fiber's natural state. The geometric lines are executed in pure silk using a precise loop-knotting technique. This choice creates a captivating visual tension.

Echoing the original ink-printed technique, the coarse nettle fibers occasionally interrupt the silk lines. This subtle interference breaks up the linearity and ensures that each rug remains a living, breathing work of art and not a sterile repetition.

Sustainable luxury

Through the use of undyed nettle and natural silk, Fonal stands as a testament to sustainable luxury. The organic interplay of the fibers creates a neutral yet deep color palette that adapts to the light in any room and offers a calm, sophisticated elegance characteristic of Finnish design.
