Craftsmanship meets carpet history: Seminar in Lörrach

Handwerkskunst trifft Teppichgeschichte: Seminar in Lörrach
17.10.2025

At DESIGNERCARPETS DRECHSLE, our love of carpets is at the heart of everything we do. We have always dedicated ourselves to the art of hand-knotted carpets – a tradition deeply rooted in history, culture, and craftsmanship. To create high-quality carpets, it is essential for us to engage intensively with the origins, techniques, and designs of antique models.

As part of a seminar held by the Federal Association of Experts for Oriental Rugs and Flatweaves on October 16, 2025, eight selected rugs were analyzed and evaluated by a group of experts. This fascinating exploration of traditional knotting techniques impressively demonstrates the diversity of rugs in terms of technique, style, and origin.

Three carpets, three cultures – one passion

  • Above: A so-called TETEX carpet from Germany

  • Bottom left: A traditional Tibetan rug from the 1980s and 1990s – hand-knotted, intensely colored and with a unique knotting technique typical of the region.

  • Bottom right: A Turkmen carpet from the second half of the 20th century – characterized by geometric patterns and the distinctive deep red color scheme.

Each of these carpets tells its own story – from its cultural origins and the materials used to the individual patterns and symbols that have been passed down for centuries.

How experts evaluate carpets

To properly analyze a carpet, various characteristics are carefully examined. These include, among other things:

  • Establishing identity: method of manufacture, materials used, country of origin and provenance

  • Dimensions: Size and proportions

  • Date of manufacture: chronological classification of origin

  • Knotting type and knotting density: indications of technique and quality

  • Pattern description: Design language, symbolism and special design features

These criteria help to determine the quality and authenticity of a carpet – and at the same time form the basis for understanding its cultural and aesthetic significance.

Preserving tradition – shaping the future

For us at DESIGNERCARPETS DRECHSLE, knowledge of traditional carpet craftsmanship is far more than just technical expertise. It is the foundation of our work and inspires our modern designs. Every piece that leaves our workshop is rooted in this long tradition – combining historical techniques with new design.
